Tame Impala
Tame Impala is the psychedelic music project of Australian multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker, born in Sydney in 1986 and raised in Perth. Parker writes, records, performs, and produces all studio material alone, transforming into a five-piece for live performances. The project emerged from Perth's isolated music scene in the late 2000s, with debut album Innerspeaker (2010) channelling vintage psych-rock through modern production techniques.
Lonerism (2012) refined Parker's vision of introverted pop, while Currents (2015) marked a decisive shift towards synthesisers and dance music, achieving both critical acclaim and commercial success. The album's influence rippled through mainstream pop, with artists from Rihanna to Travis Scott seeking Parker's production work. His meticulous layering of synth timbres and processed vocals created a signature sound that defined mid-2010s alternative music.
The Slow Rush (2020) continued this trajectory, exploring disco and funk whilst maintaining Parker's preoccupation with time, anxiety, and self-doubt. The project has won multiple ARIA Awards and earned Grammy nominations, cementing Tame Impala as a rare Australian act with genuine global reach and lasting influence on contemporary psychedelic pop.
