Stop Making Sense

Released
1984

Captured across three December 1983 nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theatre, this live document finds Talking Heads at their most physically articulate, matching David Byrne's oversized suit and twitchy choreography with polyrhythmic funk that pulls from Africa, Parliament and art school neuroses. Jonathan Demme's film elevated concert documentation into pure cinema, but the album stands alone, nine musicians locking into grooves that make 'Girlfriend Is Better' and 'Life During Wartime' feel like transmissions from a better, stranger planet.

Music Genres

Illustration of a person wearing a yellow and pink helmet, a dark jacket, and black pants, sitting with one arm extended forward and an oversized yellow robotic hand in front.
