Death Grips

BIOGRAPHY

Death Grips emerged from Sacramento in 2010 as a confrontational collision of punk nihilism and hip-hop aggression, formed by producer Andy Morin, drummer Zach Hill, and vocalist Stefan Burnett (MC Ride). Their self-released Exmilitary (2011) announced a ferociously abrasive aesthetic: distorted 808s, Hill's spasmodic percussion, and Burnett's guttural, paranoid delivery. The trio signed to Epic Records, released The Money Store (2012) to critical acclaim, then leaked No Love Deep Web themselves, forcing their departure from the label.

Their sound obliterates genre boundaries, fusing industrial noise, hardcore punk's velocity, and experimental electronic music's textural violence. Tracks like "Guillotine" and "Hacker" exemplify their maximalist approach, where abrasive timbre becomes the primary compositional tool. The group's chaotic online presence, including sudden breakups and cryptic communication, mirrored their sonic unpredictability.

Death Grips disbanded in 2014, reformed, then dissolved again in 2024, leaving behind six studio albums that captured digital-age anxiety and the disintegration of genre itself. Their influence permeates contemporary experimental rap and harsh electronic music.
