Waking Hours
Del Amitri's breakthrough second album delivered Justin Currie's acerbic social observations wrapped in jangly, radio-ready guitar pop that captured British suburban ennui without the self-pity. Nothing Ever Happens became their calling card, a sardonic commentary on everyday monotony that still sounds bracingly cynical, while Kiss This Thing Goodbye cracked the American market with melodic hooks sharp enough to cut through late-eighties clutter.
The Glasgow quartet's literate songwriting and polished production earned Smiths comparisons, though Currie's caustic wit felt distinctly Scottish, less romantic and more resigned to life's disappointments.
