The B-52's

Released
1979

The B-52's arrived from Athens, Georgia like a day-glo meteor, their debut transforming Chris Blackwell's Compass Point Studios into a surf-punk fever dream. Ricky Wilson's detuned guitar snarls, Fred Schneider's deadpan yelps, and those glorious girl-group harmonies turned 'Rock Lobster' and 'Planet Claire' into new wave essentials that made even Lennon sit up and return to music.

Their thrift-store aesthetic and absurdist lyrics masked serious compositional chops, creating something genuinely strange that college radio couldn't resist. Athens had announced itself to the world.
