Random Access Memories
Daft Punk's fourth album abandoned their electronic templates for a lavish analogue fantasia, summoning Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder and forty other musicians to recreate the plush studio craft of late-70s Los Angeles. The gambit paid off spectacularly: Get Lucky became 2013's inescapable anthem, while the album swept five Grammys including Album of the Year.
What could have been mere nostalgic pastiche instead became a pointed argument about texture and humanity in digital-age pop, proving two French robots understood American disco's soul better than most flesh-and-blood revivalists ever managed.
