Prince weaponised the soundtrack format to smuggle genuine ambition into MTV's living rooms, matching Minneapolis funk grit with stadium rock grandiosity. The Revolution's live-wire energy powers tracks like When Doves Cry, famously stripped of bass yet losing nothing in primal urgency, whilst the title track's climactic guitar solo remains untouchable.
Five number one singles and 24 weeks atop the charts translated to something rarer: an actual crossover that didn't dilute the source material. Purple Rain made freakdom commercially viable without asking permission.
