MGMT's debut arrived as the indie scene was gorging itself on earnest guitar rock, and here were two Wesleyan grads offering ironic synth-pop about rockstar fantasies instead. Producer Dave Fridmann polished their dorm-room psychedelia into three inescapable singles that soundtracked every advertisement and house party from 2008 onwards.

The duo's self-aware detachment proved commercially savvy, earning platinum plaques and a Dance Grammy for Electric Feel, before they deliberately torched that accessibility with increasingly wilful follow-ups. A perfect document of late-2000s indie ambition meeting mainstream appetite.
