The Strokes arrived with Is This It like they'd stolen the keys to CBGB's back catalogue and spray-painted it with Velvet Underground cool. Gordon Raphael's lo-fi production gave Julian Casablancas' detached vocals and those interlocking guitars a gritty immediacy that made every other rock band sound overthought.
Eleven tracks of two-minute perfection that somehow convinced a generation raised on nu-metal that guitar music could be laconic, stylish and vital again. It wasn't nostalgia; it was grand larceny executed with impeccable taste.
