Arriving eight months after Are You Experienced?, Axis: Bold as Love found Hendrix abandoning the studio as mere documentation tool. Eddie Kramer's phasing effects swirl through Spanish Castle Magic while Little Wing distills three minutes of weightless melancholy that countless guitarists would spend lifetimes chasing.
The psychedelic bluster remains, but Castles Made of Sand and If 6 Was 9 reveal a songwriter grappling with something beyond power-trio pyrotechnics. Even losing the title track's master tape in a taxi couldn't derail an album that repositioned rock guitar as paintbrush rather than blunt instrument.
